In VR, motion sickness can occur in the form of a disturbance of the sense of balance. The eyes perceive a movement in VR, which the sense of balance cannot confirm. This lack of confirmation is triggered by the player standing still in the physical world. In the same way, delayed movement in VR can cause nausea because the movement of the head does not correspond to the movement of the camera in VR.
The confusion of the sense of balance can occur through games played in the first-person perspective. Many fast movements, a shaky camera movement, abrupt camera pans and a narrowed or unfamiliar viewing angle are frequent triggers for motion sickness. In addition, a poor screen resolution or a close distance to the screen can cause dizziness. Teleportation can also be a problem, due to quick jumps or rapid changes between different positions.

Motion sickness can cause various symptoms. These include dizziness, cold sweat, motion instability, general discomfort, nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue and lethargy. These symptoms must be prevented, so a few possibilities are explained below. However, it is first necessary to explain which people are most susceptible to motion sickness.
First of all, it must be noted that every person has individual reactions. Here, the age must be taken into account. While children between eight and twelve are the most susceptible, the symptoms become less noticeable with increasing age from 18 to 50. It is estimated that five per cent suffer from these symptoms their entire lives. Whereas the risk is low or non-existent in experienced gamers.
A few strategies exist to prevent the symptoms of motion sickness. Firstly, it is important to use VR in a pleasant environment. This environment can be created by good air circulation, pleasant smells, and pleasant music. A piece of ginger, one to two hours before VR use, can be helpful. Ginger serves to calm the stomach. Furthermore, care must be taken to calibrate the glasses correctly to avoid poor resolution.
Since humans are creatures of habit, playing in VR can be trained. For this purpose, small play sessions should be repeated steadily. However, this process must be considered individually. Symptoms can always occur as a side effect, which is why this process can be tedious.
There is already a study that uses "redirected walking" to avoid motion sickness. In this case, the images in VR are slightly rotated and superimposed so that the players unconsciously walk around slight curves in the physical world.
